The Fitzrovia Chapel is pleased to present Middlesex Memories: Moments in Time, an exhibition of photographs by Carole Rawlinson FRPS documenting the final days of the Middlesex Hospital.

Taken in 2005, as the Middlesex Hospital was being decommissioned, Rawlinson’s photographs capture the atmosphere and character of one of London’s great and much-loved teaching hospitals as it was cleared and closed, ahead of its sale and eventual demolition in 2008, leaving only the chapel remaining.

Rawlinson had a personal connection to the hospital, having given birth to her daughters at the Middlesex. She first became aware that the hospital was closing while passing it on a bus. Intrigued and moved by the impending loss of a place that had played such an important role in the lives of generations of Londoners, she began photographing the hospital over several months.

Returning regularly, Rawlinson documented different areas of the hospital as they were progressively emptied, preserving details of its spaces, objects and working life before they were lost forever. The project extended beyond photography to include interviews with members of the Middlesex community, ranging “from presidents to patrons”, creating a broader record of the people and memories connected to the institution.

The Middlesex Memories project was subsequently presented as an exhibition and accompanying book arranged by University College London Hospital Charity. The photographs have since become an evocative record of a significant chapter in the history of the Middlesex and the Fitzrovia community.

A selection of photographs from the project will be exhibited free of charge at The Fitzrovia Chapel, former chapel to the hospital, from Sunday 13 to Friday 18 September 2026, as part of Open City London 2026.

The exhibition will coincide with the launch of a reprint of the iconic Middlesex Memories book, which will be available to purchase at the chapel during the exhibition.
